Decentralized identity(DID): what it is and why it matters

A decentralized identity (DID) is an identifier the user controls with their own key. In Block-Auth, each user is a cryptographically verifiable DID in your backend: you hold no passwords and identity is reusable. It’s the foundation of passwordless.

SOVEREIGN IDENTITY

Password databases are a target

Every credential you hold is a risk: if it’s stolen, all your users fall at once. Decentralized identity removes that central store of secrets.

1

Authentication returns the DID

The flow returns the user’s address/DID.

2

Your backend validates the signature

A call to isAddressSigned() checks it’s valid.

3

Reusable credentials

Users present verifiable credentials across apps.

CAPABILITIES

Everything a decentralized identity gives you

Cryptographic proof of identity, user control and portability.

Verifiable DID

Each user is an identifier you can check in your backend via cryptographic signature (isAddressSigned), with no secrets held. The user controls their key; you only verify.

Verifiable credentials

Signed attributes the user presents when they choose.

Selective disclosure

Prove “over 18” without showing the whole document.

Reusable

The same identity signs across several apps in the ecosystem.
